What is your role and what do you enjoy most about the job/working at Waters and Atkinson: After many years as the audit manager, I now only work part-time as a client manager, looking after a small portfolio of related client businesses. I have enjoyed establishing a close relationship with those clients and getting to know their businesses very well over many years. How did your career in accountancy begin/what inspired you: I fell into accountancy purely by accident! I applied for the job as a temporary role, having just graduated from university with a maths degree, whilst I looked for my “real” career. I quickly discovered that with a flair for numbers and an inquiring mind, accountancy, and in particular, auditing was, in fact, my ideal career, and I never left! What do you like doing outside work: I enjoy spending time outdoors and most of our holidays are spent walking in the mountains either in the UK or abroad or cross-country skiing in the winter. I am also a very keen gardener and spend one day a week as a volunteer at Sizergh Castle Gardens. Then there’s the music – see below! Tell us something about yourself not many people know: Somewhat late in life, I suddenly decided I wanted to learn a brass instrument. Fast forward 10 years and I now play the cornet in Morecambe Brass Band. If you weren’t an accountant, what would you like to be?
