Can I represent myself in court? Yes, you can. ‘Should you represent yourself?’ is a different question. I received a call from a motorist who had been disqualified from driving that very day by the Magistrates’ Court for 6 months. He needed to know urgently if there was anything he could do. Apparently he had researched the matter himself and believed he didn’t need representation as his case was so strong! He did have options the most obvious being to appeal to the Crown Court. The trouble is that he had been disqualified with immediate effect and he needed his licence, upon which his whole family depended, to run his business. It could take weeks or even months for his appeal to be heard and he would be sustaining losses and losing clients daily! If you have an upcoming court case at least obtain some guidance before-hand as to the merits of your case. At Kent Traffic Law there is no charge for the initial call during which provisional guidance can be obtained.
