Some interesting research has come from Standard Life recently. Their survey found that only 35% of UK adults were confident that they could complete a self assessment tax return correctly, and more than half didn't know when the deadline for filing was. Lots of our clients choose for us to file their returns simply because it takes this uncertainty away from them - they hand it over to us to get completed accurately whilst they focus on other areas of their life or work. With interest rates still relatively high and personal allowances reducing, what concerns me is that many private individuals could find themselves in the position of needing to file a tax return and a gap in their knowledge of how to do it correctly. As tax thresholds change from one year to the next, it's important to check every tax year as your circumstances might have changed and the need for self assessment triggered.
