I was discussing with a client the other day about an analysis tool he wants for his business. The question was whether they should invest in bespoke tool or whether they may be an off-the shelf tool available. When we discussed the requirements of this tool he said a great set of words which I totally understood. It needs to be "as simple as it can be but as complicated as it needs to be". I've used tools before that were really simple to use but when you needed to go a bit deeper the initial benefits of simplicity were negated by the lack of visibility required at different levels. The potential benefits of a bespoke tool are that you can accommodate all of the detail and nuances you require but I suppose it does run the risk of being more cumbersome than it needs to be. The upshot is that he's investigating the market for some off the shelf products first and the thought process here was simply: 1. I won't be the first person on the planet to have this need and so it may already have been addressed 2. An off-the shelf solution will likely have more support and will constantly be getting upgrades 3. A solution that's 90% good enough that's available now might well be better than a 100% solution that'll take ages to develop Whichever way turns out to be the way this business takes, I'm impressed that they are constantly thinking of ways to refine and improve the way they run their business.
